The Vice President of Development (VPD) is a member of the senior management team, reports directly to the President, and also works closely with the Board and other DSM staff. The position is responsible for creating and executing the continued philanthropic growth of this resurgent, fast-growing and high-profile Broadway presenting company and is charged with providing innovative leadership and strategic vision to all aspects of DSM’s fundraising program.  The position supervises a full-time staff of five; current direct reports include the Director of Development, Corporate, Foundation and Strategy and the Director of Development, Annual Giving, Special Projects and Strategy.

Core Responsibilities


The Vice President of Development will:

  • With the senior leadership of DSM, create and execute an innovative, strategic and comprehensive development plan that will support the operating and capital needs of DSM for the present and the long term.
  • Aggressively lead and direct the organization and implementation of DSM’s fund raising from individual, corporate, foundation, and government sources.  Key initiatives include working to instill a more philanthropic culture in DSM; driving a focused effort on identifying, cultivating and growing DSM’s donor base; fostering an increased emphasis on the effective stewardship of donors; and creating an effective internal structure that will help maximize the department’s results.
  • Work with DSM’s senior leadership to motivate and strengthen the Board in its role in development; expand, manage and coordinate the trustees’ and other volunteers’ involvement in fundraising activities; take an active role in serving and supporting the Board, Development Committee, and other Board committees.
  • Partner with DSM’s Education and Community Partnerships department to maximize fund raising for DSM’s growing array of education and community partnerships programming.
  • Work closely with staff, trustees, and other volunteers to maximize the effectiveness of DSM’s special events in order to help develop, attract, and retain donors.
  • Foster ongoing, collegial relations among the development department and other departments of the organization and help integrate fund raising into the culture of DSM.
  • Build, train, mentor, and supervise an effective and professional development team and support staff, and recruit and replace as necessary, in consultation with DSM’s senior leadership.
  • As a representative of DSM, take an active role in the community and cultivate key relationships and associations with centers of influence within the city, state and region.
  • Supervise and manage the research and preparation of all foundation, corporate and government grant proposals, and oversee grant administration and reporting.
  • Manage and oversee the formation and maintenance of necessary development reports and records; prepare and manage the department's financial reports and budget; monitor budget and control expenditures.   


 The successful candidate must:   

  • Have a background in the cultivation and solicitation of individual, corporate, foundation, and government donors, with proven ability to develop, solicit, and steward major gifts, and a demonstrated track record in the management of successful development programs, including staff and volunteer management. Prior capital/endowment campaign experience a plus.
  • Be a strategic, seasoned, proactive, and collaborative leader with solid experience in managing, mentoring and motivating staff, and the ability to inspire those working with him/her toward accomplishing common objectives.
  • Be very well-organized, able to plan strategically, set priorities and focus on details and follow through while not losing sight of the big picture, with the flexibility to welcome and embrace change, and the ability to balance the many challenges inherent in an active and lively performing arts environment.
  • Be a warm, highly personable, mature individual, with an entrepreneurial mindset, results-oriented work ethic, and a strong customer service focus, who works effectively with trustees, donors, volunteers and inside staff and is experienced in dealing with high net worth individuals, and who relishes taking an active, public role in the cultivation and solicitation of donors, and as a representative of DSM.
  • Understand and support the mission of DSM, appreciate the important role cultural institutions play in the life of a vibrant community, and have the ability to articulate this mission and role to others.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong experience with fund raising technology, integrated database systems, Microsoft Office and social media platforms.  
  • Have at least seven years of progressive fund-raising experience in a not for profit organization, preferably in the arts.
